The VPO Board

Mark Jackson, VPO President

Welcome to the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra!

The Philharmonic plays and important role in the lower mainland community.  First and foremost, the orchestra is a place to practice and perform for musicians from all walks of life, from students to retirees, from manufacturers to lawyers.  The VPO is made up of Individuals who have musical backgrounds that are as varied as their professions.  In this group, the barriers between individuals disappear behind the common goal of producing music, and life long friendships are built in the process.

The orchestra provides both professional and up and coming musicians with the opportunity to perform solo works.  Our soloists over the years have included multiple music professors, music teachers and a number of members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.  The semi-annual Concerto Competition provides up and coming students with a rare opportunity to perform with an orchestra while dealing with the real pressures to perform.

Over the years, the orchestra has also provided an opportunity for new conductors to learn under the direction of our music director Jin Zhang.  The Assistant Conductor scholarship was set up after the passing of Wallace Leung, a previous VPO music director who very much supported the idea of providing opportunities for new conductors to grow.

I hope you will have the opportunity to support us this upcoming season.

Thank You,

Mark Jackson
President, Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra
