The Wallace Lueng Memorial Internship was created to provide an opportunity for a newly trained conductor to gain experience working with a full-sized symphony while being mentored by the Music Director.
Wallace Leung was VPO's Music Director from 1996-2001. Mr. Leung was also the orchestra's first assistant conductor. The creation of the Assistant Conductor position and scholarship was a realization of his vision and dream to mentor young musicians. Wallace was much loved by the VPO players. He died suddenly and tragically at the age of 34 in 2002. The VPO continues to realize his vision of a training position for upcoming conductors.
It is expected that the Assistant Conductor will conduct a piece in each concert, assist with sectionals and gain an understanding of orchestra administration. Alumni of the post include Lindsay Mellor, Leslie Dala, Barnaby Kerekes and John Trotter. For all of them the opportunity afforded by this internship was significant in the development of their musical careers.
